Christmas Tree and Saint Nicholas, #Christmas #Tree #Nicholas #gift #shoe #Haiku via @PatFurstenberg

Christmas Tree and Saint Nicholas, two Christmas Haiku

So tall for small child,

Only Dad reaches its top.

Christmas tree promise.

~

6 December holds a special place and my heart, it brings the first thrills of Christmas joy and of small miracles.

You might not know, but in Christian Orthodox tradition 6 December is the day we celebrate Saint Nicholas (Saint Nicholas of Myra, Nicholas of Bari or Nicholas the Wonderworker), who was an early Christian bishop of the ancient Greek city of Myra in Asia Minor (now Demre inTurkey). It is said that he was legendary for his secret gift-giving. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, and students.

How Saint Nicholas became the patron saint of children is quite an astonishing tale. Now remember that all the written records of his life were made on papyrus or parchment, less durable than present day paper, thus had to be re-copied by hand in order to be preserved for future generations. One story speaks of a wicked butcher who, during a dreadful famine, lured three little children into his house, killed them and placed their remains in a barrel to cure, planning to sell them later as ham. Nicholas, who was visiting that region to care for the poor and the hungry, saw right through the butcher’s white fabrications and resurrected the pickled children by making the Sign of the Cross.

Saint Nicholas Haiku

Clean shoes and bright hopes-

Children go to bed smiling.

Mom’s a child at heart.

Turkey, a Thanksgiving Haiku, #thanksgiving #celebration via @PatFurstenberg

Turkey, a Thanksgiving Haiku

The King’s jewels thrown

On the farmstead’s butchers block.

Thanksgiving Rising.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Did you know that the very first Thanksgiving to be recorded was held back in 1621 by a group of Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians?

This was one year after the Pilgrims arrived on the territories occupied by 40 000 people in 67 villages, forming the proud Wampanoag Nation. Pilgrims and Indians signed a peace treaty that sadly only lasted as long as the Indian chief Massoit was alive.

“I have a confession to make. I’m not much of a dog lover. I’m more a cat person so I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy As Good As Gold, celebrating dogs. I needn’t have worried. I thoroughly enjoyed this charming collection of verse and as a result of reading it I think I understand dogs so much better.” @Lindahill50Hill, Book Reviewer

There is something truly magical about this wonderful collection. Having read each poem, I love how every word celebrates our canine companions from the tip of their wet noses to the wag of their tails.” (Susan Day, Editor and Author)

Pup’s Second Breakfast #humorous #poem #AsGoodAsGold via @PatFurstenberg

Pup’s Second Breakfast

Dogs have feelings too.
Dogs have feelings too.

~A humorous poem  for pet lovers and not only! Read more poetry in my new book As Good As Gold~

I tiptoe in the morning around the room,

Get ready for the day as quiet as a plume;

Since at my feet, hidden quite deep

That only his nose peeps

Snores pup.

Under my duvet asleep.

He’s quite a puzzle, my puppy is

For he can hear,  from his deep sleep

As breakfast food touches his bowl.

And in a second he’s at the door.

He yawns.

And then he eats!

My coffes’s ready, wait for my toast,

Pick up the paper. Puppy? engrossed

In his own breakfast, yet now and again

He comes to touch base.

A good intend.

Polite! I’m proud of pup!

My toast is done!  It jumped right up

Just as pup ate his very last bite

And shook his head then quenched his thirst.

I’m ready to bite. Puppy? transposed.

I glance at him, he looks away.

I sigh. Only his nose moves.

Ready to eat I am. Again. When something drips.

The tap?  The rain? The bag of trix

Right by my feet? With big, round belly

And eyes so soft especially

As I hand him a piece

Of toast. And now, I eat in peace.

P.S. Pup ate half a toast.

Between the toast and pup I love pup most
