A Long Walk Home, Christmas Novelette by D.L. Finn

A Long Walk Home, a Christmas novelette by D.L. Finn is an enjoyable, satisfying read that combines the magic of Christmas with the tingle of ‘what if?’

It is Christmas Eve and young Kenzie Logs feels out of tune with the exciting season that surrounds her. As she walks through a busy city filled with last-minute shoppers, she couldn’t feel more alone and the truth about her sad life is in stark contrast with the appearances of her work, so upbeat.

As Kenzie’s boss Eileen closed extra early for the long Christmas weekend Kenzie is faced with the prospect of spending this happy holiday alone. We discover why Kenzie is alone and what happened between her and her ex-fiancée Heath Basil, as well as why she has no family or friends in her life… For once, desperate to avoid any more pity looks Kenzie lied to her friends. Did she also lie to herself, choosing not to see the obvious because she wanted so badly to be needed? D. L. Finn answers this question for us.

With her car in the garage she chooses to walk home on Christmas Eve, her thought constantly returning to  “life’s a permanent winter.” It is a walk that will change her life.

“How could life get any worse?” she asks herself and so did I.

What Kenzie is not noticing on her way home mirrors what she wasn’t noticing during her relationship with Heath. And foreshadowing the upcoming events is “the storm of the century” the city is warned against.

I always imagined Angels as old-ish creatures with round, rosy faces. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that D. L. Finn paints hers as a gorgeous redhead woman, and as a man with green eyes and long hair. And as proof that they exist-besides the moments of sheer luck, or serendipity that life is sprinkled with-are the instances we would refer to as a struck of genius, or instant happiness at the thought of doing a good deed. I loved this thought very much, and it is something I’ll take from this read.

Yes, I admit that I enjoyed riding the anger wave with Kenzie, but I also enjoyed the seasonal imagery used by the author; the use of a storm, the contrast between Kenzie’s red winter outfit and her friend Joy’s one, white and green, the empty bench in the frozen park. I shared the warm-feeling of rescuing tiny kittens with the protagonists, a literally blessing in disguise. I loved the thought that there is “the good of the season” and that “love wins always” at Christmas time.

I would recommend this book to anyone in need of an emotional pick-me-up, or to those who mourn a relationship. To the reader who want nothing to do with romance, and to the reader who feels like answering “whatever” to Merry Christmas. A Long Walk Home by D.L. Finn will shine a warm glow on your day.
