Author of the Year, Spillwords Press Awards Patricia Furstenberg

I am honored and elated to receive this Award. It will set the standards higher for my work, starting today.

This year’s competition was fierce. There were 13 very talented authors nominated for Author of the Year. I am proud to say that two other Romanian writers, Virginia Mateiaş and Simona Prilogan, were nominated in the Publication of the Year (Poetic). Virginia Mateiaş won.

“I touched the rain, it was all jewels,
I touched the rain and laughed, and laughed.” (Rain by Patricia Furstenberg)

Rain poem Patricia Furstenberg

“Oh, the way you can change your looks, it never ceases to surprise me! And the heavenly scent of your voluptuous body, always surprising, yet always the same; homely, unmistakable, and promising.” (A Love Letter to Coffee by Patricia Furstenberg)

A Love Letter to Coffee lyric prose Patricia Furstenberg

“I am into the woods before I know it, my feet following the path, my heart heavy with remorse, my ears alert, and forward facing like a horse’s. The mulching leaves of early autumn soften my steps, the earth smells wet and rotting. I pulled it in, crisp, clean, to steady myself. The moon is about to go, relinquishing her hold onto the forest. Good.” (Pure at Heart bu Patricia Furstenberg)

Pure at Heart literature Patricia Furstenberg

“Hear the wind hissing like a crazed whip,
hear it roaring like a mad thing,
the sky darkened, sun long dead,
moon a yellow thumbnail about to swell” (On the Night of Sant Andrew by Patricia Furstenberg)

On the Night of Saint Andrew Halloween poem Patricia Fustenberg

“The street fell silent. The room was long quiet, only the sound of paper rustling stirred the shadows, the memories, and the heavy breathing of old Father Carp. Until the sounds became more and more regular, until the soothing whisper of paper ceased too, the heavy book dropped, the old man deep asleep.
Outside, the town was asleep too and dreams and wishes swirled around it, on wings of frigid winds.” (An Unexpected Christmas Gift by Patricia Furstenberg)
