Reading Over the Weekend: Brody Cody Children’s Books by Toni Pike

Welcome to Reading Over the Weekend where we celebrate the BRODY CODY stories by Toni Pike, books that entertain, spark the imagination, and sometimes leave us looking at the world through a child’s eyes.

Some books ask to be analysed. Others ask to be noticed. And then there are those that make you pause halfway through a page and say, I want to remember that.

Ahead of each weekend I will share books that have caught my attention: what I enjoyed about them, what surprised me, and occasionally the memories or questions they stirred.

Reading Over the Weekend: Brody Cody Children’s Books by Toni Pike

This weekend, we’re stepping into the wonderfully imaginative world of Brody Cody, the eight-year-old hero of Toni Pike’s charming children’s series. Across these two adventures, Brody discovers that life can be full of unexpected changes, mysterious happenings, and perhaps even the occasional alien or ghost!

BRODY CODY AND THE STEPMOTHER FROM OUTER SPACE, Book 1

In Brody Cody and the Stepmother from Outer Space, Brody’s comfortable life with his dad is turned upside down when his father returns from a publishing conference with a new wife, Pandora Smith, a children’s author. Brody isn’t at all pleased with the changes she brings to his life—and when she seems almost too perfect, he and his friends begin to wonder whether she might actually be an alien from outer space.

BRODY CODY AND THE HAUNTED VACATION HOUSE, Book 2

Then, in Brody Cody and the Haunted Vacation House, Brody and his friends head to the Blue Mountains for a holiday at the mysterious Wysludge Manor. Strange noises, a haunted house, a missing trail, and a mysterious figure turn what should have been a relaxing vacation into a spooky adventure.

Both stories combine humour, friendship, mystery, and a child’s wonderfully active imagination, while quietly exploring some very real emotions along the way.

Why I Enjoyed the Brody Cody Children’s Books by Toni Pike

What I particularly enjoy about Toni Pike’s Brody Cody books is the way she combines fun and adventure with themes that matter to children.

Brody is an appealing young protagonist because his adventures are rooted in experiences children can understand. In the first book, he has to adjust to a major change in his family and learn that accepting someone new doesn’t mean losing the people he already loves. In the second, his worries about becoming a big brother add another emotional thread beneath the mystery and ghostly goings-on.

And then there are Brody’s friends—Kyle, Anastasia, and Lucrezia—whose different personalities bring plenty of humour and energy to the stories. Their curiosity often gets them into trouble, but their friendship and courage help them find their way through it.

I also like the balance Toni Pike achieves between spooky and safe. There are mysterious houses, strange noises, possible ghosts, and even a suspected extraterrestrial, but the stories remain light-hearted rather than genuinely frightening. Young readers can enjoy the thrill of wondering What is going on? without being overwhelmed by the darker side of the mystery.

These are books that entertain while encouraging children to use their imagination, think about what they believe, and appreciate the importance of friendship and family.

Recommended To:

I would recommend the Brody Cody series to children aged 6–9 who enjoy:

  • Funny and adventurous chapter books
  • Mysteries and puzzles to solve
  • Friendship and family stories
  • Ghostly adventures without anything too scary
  • Imaginative stories with a touch of the extraordinary
  • Characters who face real-life changes alongside their adventures

They would also make enjoyable read-aloud books for parents, grandparents, teachers, or anyone sharing a story with a young reader.

With Brody Cody, there is always another mystery waiting around the corner—and you never quite know whether the explanation will be perfectly ordinary… or completely out of this world!

Reading Over the Weekend is a blog series celebrating the joy of reading. Not every book I read will be new. Not every book will belong to the same genre. Some may be historical fiction, others memoir, crime, biography, or something completely unexpected. What they will have in common is that they have stayed with me after I closed the book. Perhaps they taught me something. They made me laugh. They opened a door into a world I had never known. Or perhaps, like a forgotten scent, they brought back something I thought I had lost.

I believe that reading is a form of travelling. We can cross centuries without leaving our chair, visit countries we might never see otherwise, inhabit lives entirely different from our, and sometimes return to our own childhood through somebody else’s memories.
